Technology map in microbiological technology: An overall picture of microbiological technology in Vietnam

The results of building technology maps in microbiological technology for socio-economic development have basically assessed and analyzed clearly important issues of the current industry such as the current status and role of microbiological technology in Vietnam's manufacturing industries, potential market needs, technology requirements, technology development capabilities and trends in the development of microbiological technology in the world, then propose for innovation priorities to enhance the position of the microbiology industry in Vietnam.

Currently, biotechnology is prioritized to develop by many countries around the world. Biotechnology is generally considered to include the main types of technologies and techniques: microbiology, enzyme technology, tissue and cell technology and genetic engineering. Microbiology is one of the branches of biotechnology, the industry that aims to exploit the best of the miraculous abilities of the microbial body.

In Vietnam, according to Master plan for biotechnology development and application in Vietnam to 2020 approved by the Prime Minister on January 22, 2008, the development and application of biotechnology focus mainly on the fields of agriculture - forestry - fishery, food processing industry, food safety, medicine - pharmacy, human healthcare, and environmental protection.

To identify priority directions for S&T programs for biotechnology development in the coming period, It is necessary to formulate a microbiological technology map for use in agriculture, industry, health and environmental protection in order to identify important applications of microbiological technology in socio-economic life, development potential, point out the strengths and technological capabilities of Vietnam on the basis of assessment of how technology compares to the world and identifies microbial technology development trends.

After 3 years of research, the research team of SATI has completed the technology mapping project in Vietnam. A microbiological technology map was created to answer issues of industry structure, market structure, existing technologies in Vietnam and the world, as well as to compare technologies between Vietnam and main trends in the world, technological challenges in Vietnam. This is an important source of information to support the development of incentive policies and development roadmaps for industries, businesses and research institutions.

 

Microbiological technology in Vietnam is divided into four main groups of technologies, including: breeding technology, seed preservation technology, fermentation technology, and product recovery and generating technology. An overall assessment shows that the level of microbiological technology in Vietnam is above average and not too far apart from the world, but remains weak in important technologies. Due to lack of concentration of resources, no synchronous investment, partly due to high investment costs while market capacity is not large enough and specialization in the business community is low. Many advanced microbiological technologies with high accuracy, high performance and large scale are not yet ready in our country.

Microbiological technology is changing the manufacturing process from traditional technology to high, clean and environmentally friendly technology for the sustainable development of the country. In healthcare, microbiological technology contributes to the production of probiotics, test kits, human and veterinary vaccines, antibiotics, and biological materials. The combination of biotechnology creates a variety of monoclonal antibodies that aid in disease diagnosis and drug development. In the environmental, microbiological technology plays an important role in the treatment of solid waste, wastewater or rehabilitation of vegetation, contaminated soil, oil spills. Organic fertilizers, microorganisms and agricultural products, biopharmaceuticals, feed additives, aquaculture and animal probiotics involved in sustainable agriculture, organic agriculture .

In the period of 2021-2025 and orientation to 2040, priority technologies for development in Vietnam include isolation technology using metagenomics, (combining molecular biology and bioinformatics techniques in breeding microbiological), gene editing technology, microcapsulation technology, large-scale fermentation technology, 4.0 technology in fermentation management and control, continuously and synchronously advancet along with the turmeric recovered technology.

Technologies prioritized for development are identified based on overall assessment criteria such as technology trends, expert judgment, technology popularity and mastery, and technologies participating in development. industry priority products.

From these results, a number of orientations for microbial technology development in the coming time have been identified and proposed based on 3 main groups (technology, infrastructure and application) and 3 levels (country, industry/sectors and businesses). These orientations make an important contribution to the development of biotechnology development strategies in the coming time, as a basis for building orders for technological research, application and innovation tasks of institutes, universities and businesses.

In addition, the development of a microbiological technology roadmap for the 4 sectors of agriculture, industry, health and environment by 2040, and 5 units (1 research institute and 4 enterprises) in the field of micro-technology. It will be a reliable basis for focusing on research and development of key groups, which are important for the development of the industry and the society.

The results of the map of microbiological technology will have positive effects on policy making, increase the efficiency of investment in research and development, innovate technology in the development of economic sectors closely related to biotechnology, improving the efficiency and management role of the Ministry of Science and Technology as well as other relevant ministries and departments.

 

For research units, on the basis of information about the current status and technological gap of domestic enterprises compared to the world, the units have more bases to identify short and long-term research directions, improve the efficiency of the application of research results in actual production, better support the development of domestic enterprises. .

For businesses operating in the biotechnology industry and related industries, the information from technology map may helps businesses capture the development trend of the domestic market as well as in the region and the world. This is the important source of information assits the business have a better development dirrection through determining the targeted market in short and long time, fomulate the technology roadmap and efficient business and production strategy.
